Trophy Magnet® Cowpeas
Cowpeas are warm season annual legumes that can provide a vast amount of high quality forage for wildlife in your food plot management plan. Trophy Magnet® Cowpeas truly are wildlife magnets drawing white tail deer, turkey, and other wildlife from miles around. Trophy Magnet® Cowpeas can produce huge amounts of browse for wildlife that is high in protein and minerals all while being very heat and drought tolerant. Whitetail deer eagerly seek out the succulent vegetation offered by cowpeas while in the vegetative state and continue to browse on the grain produced in the pods as the cowpeas mature. Turkey will also often utilize cowpeas consuming insects that are attracted by the growing plants then later consuming the grain as the seed pods mature. When either planted alone or in combination with other warm season plants, cowpeas can add a valuable component to your overall wildlife food plot plan. There are several varieties of cowpeas each having it’s own traits and advantages. All cowpeas should be planted when the soil temperature has warmed to above 65 degrees.
Best planting time is June through July.
Trophy Magnet Cowpeas should be planted at 20 – 25 lbs/acre when planted stand alone.
Cowpeas are legumes meaning they can fix nitrogen in the soil that is unavailable to most plants. However, seed should be inoculated with the appropriate rizobia in order to maximize nitrogen fixation. Cowpeas will also respond to nitrogen applied through a conventional fertility program. This year, be sure to incorporate Trophy Magnet Cowpeas into your wildlife food plot management plan and create your own “wildlife magnet”.
